The 2002 Story
One headline changed medicine.
The fine print never made the news.
In 2002, the Women’s Health Initiative study was halted early, and headlines announced that hormone therapy causes breast cancer. Doctors pulled millions of women off hormones almost overnight. Here’s what the study actually showed.
+8 in 10,000
The actual increase in breast cancer cases per year in the combined-hormone arm — under 0.1% in absolute terms, reported to the public as a frightening “26% increase.”
Fewer
~80%
The risk was misrepresented for a generation. The suffering it caused was not hypothetical.

The Real Cost
Avoiding hormones isn't the safe choice. It's just a different risk.
Tens of thousands of premature deaths
Researchers estimate that as many as 91,000 women aged 50–59 died prematurely in the decade after 2002 — women who had hysterectomies and avoided estrogen therapy that the evidence supported. Heart disease, not breast cancer, is the #1 killer of women, and estrogen started near menopause is protective of the cardiovascular system.
Decades of unnecessary suffering
Hot flashes, sleepless years, bone loss, brain fog, depression, painful intimacy — dismissed as “just menopause” and left untreated. Meanwhile men with collapsing testosterone were told fatigue, weight gain, and low mood were “just aging.” Neither had to be endured. They still don’t.

Individualized Risk Assessment
We run a cancer program. Risk assessment is our specialty.
Most clinics prescribing hormones have never managed cancer risk. We assess it every day. The same terrain-based evaluation behind our Terrain Oncology Program informs every hormone decision we make — your genetics, your family history, your labs, your biology.
- Personal and family cancer history, evaluated — not just asked about
- Genetic and terrain markers that shape your individual risk
- Baseline and ongoing monitoring, with dosing adjusted to the data
- An honest conversation about your numbers — both risks: treating, and not treating
Your risk isn’t a statistic from 2002.
It’s yours.
Every hormone decision at James Clinic starts with your individual risk profile — not a 24-year-old headline.
HOW IT WORKS
Three steps. Zero runaround.
1. Book a free discovery call
Tell us your symptoms, your history, and your concerns. We'll tell you honestly whether we can help.
2. Get the full hormone picture
Comprehensive hormone, metabolic, and risk testing — far beyond the single TSH or total-T your last physical checked
3. Optimize, monitor, adjust
A bioidentical protocol built for your biology, monitored over time and tuned as your body responds.
"No hormones. Ever."
It's more complicated than that.
We can have that conversation.
The decision stays yours.
Hormone therapy after cancer is an individualized medical decision made between you and your physician after a complete evaluation. It is not appropriate for everyone — which is exactly why it deserves a real assessment instead of a reflex.

I love the James Clinic and everyone there! I have learned so much about how to improve my health and not just how to treat my symptoms. They are so real there. They talk to you. They engage on a personal level and really care about my health and wellness. I feel very in control of my healthcare rather than being controlled by the provider or insurance company. I cannot say enough positive things about Dr James and her entire staff. We work primarily with Sara Taylor, NP, and she has been nothing short of amazing. Our whole family, including my two teenage boys, have been with them for over a year now and we are thankful every day that we found them. One of my teenage sons has ASD, on top of numerous health issues and the attention Sara and the team has given to help him has been life changing!Posted on Google Brett & Connie RobertsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Sara Taylor is awesome! She has taken care of all my outpatient needs for more than 18 months! 10/10 all the timePosted on Google Jennifer LymanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. In addition to being incredibly knowledgable, I really appreciate the care Kate takes with her patients. It's very valuable to me that they are functional medicine physicians/NPs at this practice vs those who wear the doctor title without having medical training.Posted on Google Joanne CurranTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. NPs Justina Timms and Sarah Taylor are always incredibly well prepared, knowledgeable and take all the time needed to explain labs and test results to me in ways that I can understand. Their professionalism and expertise continue to astound me. They also check in after procedures or explanations with well documented follow up. In addition, every nurse at the clinic is warm, friendly, personable, knowledgeable and professional to the Nth degree! Theresa, Michelle, Whitney, Lauren, Brenda, Mary and Chelsea all work hard and are extremely timely when completing procedures such as HBOT and MDI treatments. I have nothing but the highest regard for the James Clinic and all who work there including their lead Dr. Mollie James. My gratitude runs deep for their services.
Feel like yourself again.
