Overview
Your journey to achieving your health goals, whether aiming for a healthier body or striving for athletic success, is driven by your unique biology. By partnering with PNOĒ, we bring you VO2 Max testing, an innovative solution that provides deeper insights into your physiology through advanced breath analysis.
With average results showing an 8% weight loss, a 14% increase in VO2Max, and a reduction of 3.5 years in biological age, the program’s effectiveness is evident in both the statistics and the transformed lives of those who use it.
Dr. James talks about VO2 Max testing and how it works.
Benefits
PNOĒ VO2 Max testing is designed to support a wide range of health and performance goals. Here are a few examples of how we use PNOĒ for both assessment and therapeutics:
Cardiovascular and respiratory conditions. Those with heart or lung issues can use VO2 max testing to monitor and improve their aerobic fitness, tissue oxygenation, and breathing efficiency. This helps in crafting safe and effective exercise plans.
Cancer patients. For those undergoing cancer therapy, VO2 max testing helps track metabolic health and manage weight, providing critical data to maintain strength and energy levels during treatment.
Post-concussion recovery. Individuals recovering from concussions can benefit by assessing mitochondrial health, posture, and breathing patterns, which are key to enhancing recovery and reducing long-term effects.
- Chronic fatigue. Testing helps identify mitochondrial function and overall energy efficiency, guiding interventions to improve energy levels and reduce symptoms of chronic fatigue.
- Athletes. High-performance athletes can optimize their training by using VO2 max data to refine event preparation, adjust training schedules, and track live performance to achieve peak condition.
How you prepare
To prepare for your VO2 Max test, avoid eating for at least 8 hours before the test, and refrain from consuming alcohol, caffeine, or stimulants like nicotine for 12 hours prior. Additionally, avoid moderate or vigorous exercise for at least 24 hours before the test. These precautions are crucial for accurate results. Please wear comfortable workout attire for the test.
What you can expect
During PNOĒ VO2 Max testing
Patient with PNOĒ VO2 Max mask
To begin, you will be fitted with the PNOĒ device. During the resting measurement, you will relax in a seated or lying position while wearing a mask or mouthpiece connected to the PNOE device. The device measures respiratory gases during normal breathing for a few minutes to establish baseline data.
For the exercise measurement, will perform exercises like walking, running on a treadmill, or cycling on an exercise bike, with intensity and duration tailored to their fitness level and goals. The PNOE device continuously analyzes respiratory gases to assess oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, and other parameters, providing insights into aerobic capacity (VO2 max) and cardiovascular fitness.
Results
After completing the PNOĒ Max VO2 test, you will receive two reports with detailed insights into both metabolic and nutritional health. This integrated approach equips you with the knowledge needed to optimize your metabolic function and tailor your nutritional intake. These reports include:
Metabolic health report
Assess your biological age and estimate your life expectancy and quality of life. This test, endorsed by the American Heart Association, provides a reliable and accurate measure of longevity and mortality risk.
Determine the speed of your metabolism and the optimal calorie intake for your goals. Understand how effectively your cells burn fats and carbohydrates at rest and during exercise, revealing potential risks for metabolic disorders such as Type II Diabetes.
Gain lab-grade insights into your cardiovascular and lung fitness. Understand how these vital organs impact your health and well-being, with your lung fitness evaluated through four distinct metrics that provide a comprehensive picture of your lung capacity and utilization.
Assess how your breathing affects cognitive performance, lower back pain, and myoskeletal health. Proper breathing is crucial for maintaining high levels of brain activity and avoiding injuries such as lower back pain.
Personalized nutrition report
Understand the speed of your metabolism and determine the optimal calorie intake based on your unique biology and fitness goals.
Analyze how effectively your cells burn fats and carbohydrates to determine the best macronutrient intake tailored to your body’s needs.
Identify the part of your body that may be hindering your health and performance, and find the most beneficial food groups to address it.
Determine the best meal timing to regulate hunger levels, minimize sugar spikes, and maximize training benefits.
Frequently asked questions
We have the information you need about PNOĒ Max VO2 test and the common questions we answer for our patients.
After completing the PNOĒ Max VO2 test, you will receive a pair of detailed reports that provide comprehensive insights into your metabolic and cardiovascular health. These reports include:
Metabolic Efficiency: Analysis of how your metabolism uses fats and carbohydrates to produce energy, offering insights into your energy mix and overall metabolic health.
VO2 Max Results: Information on your VO2 max, which measures your body’s maximum oxygen utilization during exercise, indicating your aerobic fitness and athletic potential.
Biological Age: An estimation of your biological age compared to your actual age, helping you understand your overall health and longevity.
Heart Rate Training Zones: Personalized heart rate training zones tailored to your fitness levels, enhancing the effectiveness of your workouts.
Lung Capacity and Breathing Efficiency: Evaluation of your lung capacity and breathing efficiency, identifying areas for improvement to maximize your physical performance.
Custom Recommendations: A personalized plan that includes specific exercises, stretches, and breathing protocols to improve your metabolic and cardiovascular health.
These results help you optimize your training, nutrition, and overall health, providing a clear path to achieving your fitness goals.
Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) Test
The first part of the PNOĒ Max VO2 test measures your resting metabolic rate (RMR), which is how much energy your body needs to function while at rest. This test is simple and non-invasive. You will arrive on an empty stomach and be outfitted with a chest strap heart monitor and face mask attached to a small power pack. After ensuring the mask fits tightly, you will lie down and relax for about 10 minutes. This allows the test to determine what fuel sources your body uses at rest, providing insights into your metabolic health.
VO2 Max Test
The second part of the test measures your VO2 max, which is the maximum amount of oxygen your body can utilize during exercise. This part is more physically demanding. You’ll start with a three-minute walking warm-up on a treadmill to establish a baseline. Then, you’ll run while the treadmill’s speed progressively increases. The goal is to ramp up your heart rate to its maximum level over 12 to 15 minutes. This data helps identify factors that might limit your peak performance during training.
